Vertebral tractions can be performed manually by a physiotherapist or through complex orthopedic equipment. The function is to develop a mechanical traction force whose purpose is to obtain a separation of the vertebral bodies which determines a stretching of the muscular and ligamentous structures and a consequent widening of the conjugation foramina (from where the spinal nerve comes out). The purpose of this treatment is to facilitate joint lubrication, joint decoction and relax the muscles, to influence painful symptoms.
Cervical tractions are commonly used for the treatment of acute and chronic cervical pain (pain in the cervical region), cervicobrachialgia (pain in the cervical region with irradiation along the arm) and muscle contractures.
Lumbar tractions are used in case of lumbago (pain in the lumbar region), lumbar sciatica (pain in the lumbar region with irradiation in the posterior area of the thigh and leg) and muscle contractures. Radiculopathies due to discoarthrosis and herniated discs represent the elective indication of lumbar tractions.
Tractions are contraindicated in the presence of severe osteoporosis, vertebral neoplasms, vertebral and vascular malformations, active rheumatic diseases and recent whiplash.
Vertebral tractions alone are often not enough to reduce the painful symptoms and the inflammatory state of the patient, but are inserted into the treatment together with other physiotherapy methods such as massage therapy, joint mobilization, motor re-education, postural re-education, physical therapies etc.
Within our practice, we make use of close collaboration between doctors and physiotherapists in order to identify the best therapy for each individual patient.
