Prof. Alvaro Zaccaria
Dr. Alvaro Zaccaria was born in Rome on March 12 1949, he attended the II Surgical Clinic of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” as an internal student.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery, at the same University, on April 7 1977, with a score of 110/110.
He attended the Vascular Surgery Department of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” from April 8 1977, directed by prof.
Paolo Fiorani, where he carries out scientific and welfare activities.
He has been registered with the Italian Society of Vascular Surgery since 8 April 1980.
He has been registered with the Italian Society of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery since 24 November 1980.
He has been a member of the International Society of Endovascular Surgery since 1982
Dr. Alvaro Zaccaria graduated as a specialist in Vascular Surgery at the Second School of Specialization in Vascular Surgery of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, directed by Prof. Paolo Fiorani,
reporting the mark of 70/70 cum laude.
In the academic years 1980-81 and 1981-82 he was a lecturer in the Second School of Specialization in Vascular Surgery of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” directed by Prof.
Paolo Fiorani, of the following subjects: Radiological semeiology of vascular diseases and diseases of the venous system “.
He has held seminars on various topics of Vascular Surgery
From November 1988 until March 2003 he was in service at the Chair of Surgery
Vascular I of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, directed by Prof. Paolo Fiorani,
In 1986 he attended the Vascular Surgery service at the Hopital Saint Petriere in Paris directed by Prof. E. Kieffer. In 1988 and 1989 he attended the Practical Course connected to the “International Congress on Laser: Applications in Vascular Surgery”, held in Scottsdale (Arizona-USA). In 1987 he attended the Vascular Surgery Service at the New York University Medical Center directed by Prof. A. Imparato (New York-USA). In 1989 he attended the Interventional Radiology Course at the Karl Franzens University of Gratz directed by Prof. Lammer. In 1989 he participated in the European Course on Angioscopy and Laser Angioplasty held in Bordeaux. Since July 1989 he has been structured as an assistant and then as a researcher and 1st level manager at the same
Chair. From March 2003 to January 2005 he was Director of the Departmental Simple Operative Unit of Vascular Surgery of the San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Rome.
From January 2005 to December 2005 he was appointed as Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Surgery
Vascular at the aforementioned hospital.
From January 2006, following a public competition, he was appointed Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Vascular Surgery.
He held this role until December 2016.
Then he took on the position of Supervisor of the Vascular Surgery Operating Unit at the department until December 2017
He was a lecturer in Vascular Surgery at the School of Specialization in Vascular Surgery of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” Sant ‘Andrea Hospital; and of Nephropathy of surgical interest at the IIa School of
Specialization in Nephrology from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
He was also interested in the development and modernization of endovascular surgery in the Chair of Vascular Surgery I and then in the clinical hospital activity, where he personally performed over 3,500 angiographies and about 9,000 elective and emergency endovascular surgery: 950
Aorto-iliacofemoral transluminal angioplasty and supra-aortic trunks, locoregional thrombolysis of peripheral arteries endoprosthesis, 15 femoro-popliteal transluminal laser angioplasty, 480 caval filter applications, 930 endoprosthesis placements for abdominal, thoracic and iliac aortic aneurysms.
He has personally performed over 5000 elective and emergency vascular surgeries: embolectomies, aorto-femoral bypasses, femoral-distal bypasses, abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid tea, stripping and EVLT-Vein radiofrequency saphenous.

Dr. Alvaro Zaccaria is the author of 102 publications in Italian and foreign scientific journals.
Currently Prof. Alvaro Zaccaria carries out freelance specialist visits and both traditional and endovascular interventions.
