Infrared rays are electromagnetic waves artificially generated by appliances mostly consisting of incandescent lamps. The radiation is completely absorbed by the surface tissues of the body, transformed into heat, which is then transmitted to the deeper layers.
It is the most classic of thermotherapies; works by virtue of the effects that heat produces:
- Local vasodilation
- Muscle relaxation
- Analgesic (the increase in temperature, when it is not abrupt, raises the excitability threshold of the nerve endings)
- Increased local metabolism
- Decrease in blood pressure
- Increased sweating (toxin elimination)
They represent a valid help in the treatment of muscle contractures, trophic ulcers, poor circulation.
