Electric current finds wide application in physiotherapy by virtue of the main effects that are recognized:
- Electrolytic (ion migration)
- Analgesic
- Stimulating
To be avoided in the presence of a pacemaker and in case of skin hypersensitivity or in the case of tissue that is not perfectly intact.
Iontophoresis acts by virtue of the electrolytic property by reducing the drug with which it is carried out into ions which are then attracted to the opposite pole thus favoring absorption. It is therefore essential to know the polarity of the working principle of the drug to position it on the right electrode.
The first few minutes of application only serve to break down the drug and then it takes 5-10 minutes to absorb the drug.
The therapeutic indications are those of the drug used (especially NSAIDs)
